STORYLINE: A dark comedy about small-town private investigator Honey O’Donahue, who delves into a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church. (IMDb)
Mysteries-movies and dark comedies are an odd combination. There are films that fit that match up that I throughly enjoy. Fargo (1996), Seven Psyshopaths (2012), and Wicked Little Letters (2024) fall under that umbrella of dark comedy/mystery film match up that I have enjoyed. With releases such as 1998’s The Big Lebowski The Coen Brothers have mastered this type of film. Ethan Coen follows his solo outing, Drive Away Dolls, with another mystery feature/dark comedy match up Honey Don’t.
The mystery in Honey Don’t appears pretty straight forward. A body is found. Who did it and why? The film follows private investigator Honey O’Donahue as she unravels the professional and personal mysteries on her life. It’s pretty cookie cutter.
Where the film becomes wildly entertaining is in the dark humor that I have come to expect in a film from a Coen brother. I laughed at the most ackward of moments. Was I rolling on the floor for all eighty nine minutes of the feature film? No. However the humor was consistent throughout the film.
I enjoyed Honey Don’t. I enjoyed Drive Away Dolls better. It came down to the mystery at the heart of the movie.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
