STORYLINE: A broker of lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten them breaks his own rules when a new client seeks his protection to stay alive. (IMDb)
I say espionage films, do films such as Jason Bourne and James Bond come to mind? They do for me. These, and films that include Zero Dark Thirty (2012) & Bridge of Spies (2015), center around spies. It’s natural they would jump to the forefront when I think of espionage films. In the other corner there are films such as Michael Clayton (2007) and Inception (2010), films that focus on corporate espionage instead of spies. At its core, the recent release, Relay is corporate espionage.
The film centers around Sarah Grant (Lily James) as she works with the secretive Ash (Riz Ahmed) to broker a deal with her former employer over documents she stole that proves their wrong doing. Of course, there is sketchy characters acting in the shadows, all the aspects of an espionage film I have come to expect and love.
Relay has all the right pieces, and they fit into the puzzle. The twists & turns, the thrills, and riveting climax are all bundled together. They add up for a fast paced, slocj feature.
There are greater espionage films out there to watch. Relay, is, simply, entertaining. It doesn’t try to be anything more than that. There is a slight message, but the film put it on the back burner in favor of crafting a thrilling movie.
Relay was just fun to watch, nothing more, nothing less.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
