STORYLINE: When Ashley asks for a divorce, the good-natured Carey runs to his friends, Julie and Paul, for support. Their secret to happiness is an open marriage; that is, until Carey crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos. (IMDb)
The War of the Roses (1989), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Before Sunrise (1996), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004),The Notebook (2004), and Her (2013) all center their plots around relationships. They volley between the comedic and the dramatic. Between all the films, all aspects of a relationship are covered. Splitsville is the new film to feature a relationship at the center of its plot.
The title tells you were the relationship is headed. The film doesn’t waste tine getting to that point, which is a nice change of pace. The audience gets to know the couple’s past through bits of dialogue throughout the film.
The film tries to hard with its comedy. There were times when the film was trying to be a rom com and others when it was trying to be a raunchy sex comedy. The two comedy types didn’t blend well. Maybe if one comedic aspect had been put on the back burner while the other moved to the forefront the humor would have worked better.
The irony of Dakota Johnson, of 50 Shades of Grey fane, starring in a comedy featuring raunchy sex humor is not lost on me.
I wasn’t quite sure what ti expect when u sat down to see Splitsville, espically after seeing The Roses. I left wanting a bit more our of what I had just watched.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
