HAMILTON

STORYLINE: “Hamilton” is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and show tunes, “Hamilton” has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theater–a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. Captured at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Broadway in June 2016, the film transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way. (IMDb)

In the world on cinema some really unique musicals have lit up the silver screen.  There’s the most famous cult classic and rock musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) as well as the jute box musical The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994).  How can I forget the 2007 musical Across the Universe, featuring all Beatles music.  Now, Disney has put its recording of the hit play Hamilton in theaters.

Initially put on streaming during the pandemic, I took advantage of the opportunity to finally see the production, as it has its theatrical run. I skipped watching it on streaming, because, well it’s streaming, and I am stubborn in my support of the movie going experience. Going in I new very little about Hamilton, which means I new the premise and style of music featured in the play. Going in I was oblivious to the songs performed in the musical.

The nice thing about getting to see this in the theater, was to take advantage of the surround sound.  While the music was enjoyable, not my favorite, but enjoyable. I liked being able to listen to it from all angles.  I have made that point in previous blogs though.

The lavish production of the Broadway stage translated well to the silver screen.  Between this and hearing the soundtrack on the surround sound, it is a case for the theatrical experience over streaming.

In a creative way, it seemed like I was getting a three hour civics lesson.  Hamilton was teaching me about the beginning of American economics and politics    through the perspective of one of the founding fathers.

I enjoyed sitting in a crowded theater, with people who are truly in love with the material.  It added to my Hamilton experience as they applauded thunderously after their favorite numbers.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
