STORYLINE: Two young men during World War I set out to record the lives, voices and music of their American countrymen. (IMDb)
You can set a tempo to the films that merge music and love stories. One of the most famous is that of June and Johnny Cash, as portrayed in 2005’s Walk the Line. Of course, not all are based on true stories. There is A Star is Born and its various adaptations as well as Sing Street (2017). 2025 has the release of The History of Sound.
It can be a difficult balancing act between the love story and the music. At different parts of the film one aspect will have to take a back seat to the other, and vice versa. In the case of full on musicals they can share the screen simultaneously. The History of Sound is not a full on musical though. It tries to balance the music with its romance story but the music ends up more on the back burner. While the love story is notable, I enjoyed the folk music featured in the film. The question is, if there was more, would I have enjoyed it less because it would of run the risk of being over saturated?
The love story featured in the film is similar to Brokeback Mountain (2005). It follows two men, who fall in love, and it’s their love story over a few years. Just like Brokeback Mountain, The History of Sound is a slow paced film filled with gorgeous cinematography.
The theme of class is a dominate theme in this feature. From the start of the film, with the WW1 draft and shown through life’s journey for both characters, the class division is fully illustrated.
The film shows love is tricky, love is real, and love is important. All this with sone really great folk music.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
