Do you remember when you lost your virginity as you danced the time warp? I was sixteen years old, at the Rialto theatre in Raleigh. Of course, I am referring to experiencing The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), vs well, we are not going down that intimate road here. Fifty years after the film rocked its way to becoming the greatest cult film in cinema history, Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror is now documenting the ups and downs of this cinematic journey.
With The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), The Rocky Horror Picture Show taught me it is ok to be a fan of the musical genre. With Rocky Horror it is the interactive aspect that I enjoy. The documentary Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror dives into the origins of the inter aspects of Rocky Horror.
The documentary follows a clear three act structure. The first act studies the origins of the material, and the skyrocketing success of the play. The second act transitions into the making of the film, how it becomes a box office bomb, transitions into a cult film, and the rise of the performance portions. The third, and most interesting act, tells how the film has impacted the lives of fans.
If you are a fan of Rocky Horror, like yours truly, there is a feast of behind the scenes in those first two acts. The third act was moving. Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror is a documentary for the fan of the film.
Until next time I will see you, with much antici…pation, at the movies!
