If blockbuster films are the bread and butter of cinema, independent films are the spices of film. Across many genres there are many great independent films. Narrowing that focus, are haunted house films. If you haven’t seen The Last Will & Testament of Rosalind Leigh (2012) I highly recommend you seek it out. It’s October 2025, which means it’s the time of year for all things spooky. Good Boy, is an independent haunted house film, now in theaters.
Good Boy takes a unique perspective, and tells its story from the point of view of the dog. The perspective didn’t aid in creating new scares, it created an interesting view point to watch the events unfold.
Good Boy goes for a slow pace type horror instead of the fast paced thrills of a slasher film. While i enjoy both types of horror, in watching Good Boy the slow pace doesn’t create the jump scares of a slasher film, rather an overall eerie feeling throughout the film. A film like The Innkeepers (2012) combined both jump scares and a slow pace atmosphere.
Good Boy clocked in at a short seventy three minutes. Any longer the film would not have worked. The story would have dragged, and the dogs perspective would have grown tiresome. Everything came together nicely in those seventy three minutes.
Good Boy worked all around from its unique perspective to the pacing of its story.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
