STORYLINE: The ultimate and comprehensive documentary film about the exceptional writer George Orwell. (IMDb)
Whether it’s an original idea, or a film adapted from a book, every film starts with the written word. Of course, there are documentaries that set their focus on writers. Author: The JT Leroy Story (2016) tells the tale of JT Leroy, the creation of author Laura Albert, and I Am Not Your Negro (2016) is about the incredible James Baldwin. Turn Every Page: The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb (2022) focuses on the working relationship between the author and his editor. Now George Orwell gets his documentary with Orwell: 2+2=5.
The documentary is a combination of multiple factors: historical footage, modern day news reals, and voice over readings of Orwell’s personal dearies. What the documentary creates is a portrait of the author, and how he he saw both, the events of his day, and the day we live in. Damien Lewis (Deeamcatcher) takes on the role of the narrator for the film.
At times Orwell: 2+2=5 is a scary film to watch. It’s scary in how, some of the radical ideas in the author’s diaries have become a modern reality. The film drives this point home, over drives it home.
The reading of the disties takes the viewer deeper into the mind of the radial author. It vecines more of a personal film, much like the way I am Not Your Negro became a more personal film for author James Baldwin.
Orwell 2+2=5 is a fasinating look into the mind of an author with radial ideas.,
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
