REGRETTING YOU (2025)

STORYLINE: Centers on the strained relationship between young mother Morgan Grant and her teenage daughter Clara, exacerbated by Morgan’s husband Chris’s tragic death, forcing them to navigate life’s challenges together. (IMDb)

There is no force powerful enough, on this planet that can make me relive my teenage years.  They were hell for me, and I don’t want to go through those years again.  Like those up and down years there are films that are good (Back to the Future, 1985), bad (17 Again, 2009), the comedic (Mean Girls, 2004), the dramatic (Lady Bird, 2017), and the terrifying (Halloween, 1978) kinds of films.  The new release, Regretting You, falls under the dramatic umbrella.

Tragedy and romance are the duel heartbeats of Regretting You, much like The Fault in Our Stars (2014).  In Regretting You, the combination pushes the emotional boundaries over the edge into being emotionally manipulative.  This is one of the cardinal sins of cinena.  I can’t stand being manipulated, in that way.

With that said the teenage years are hard to capture, In popular  culture. John Hughes is widely considered to have done it the best with releases such as Sixteem Candles (1984) and Ferris Burller’s Day Off (1986).  I truly I enjoyed The Twilight Saga, but they failed to capture what it was truly like being a teenager.  It’s hard to capture those years, I’m popular culture, even in a shared general since.  While the plot points where unique to Regretting You, it struggled with the overall shared experience of being a teenager. Then again, I my teenage years were  pre smart phones, so it was a bit different.

Regretting You was not my kind of film, but I gave it a shot nonetheless the less.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
