Retro Rewind: HALLOWEEN (1978)

STORYLINE: The year is 1963, the night: Halloween. Police are called to 43 Lampkin Ln. only to discover that 15-year-old Judith Myers has been stabbed to death by her 6-year-old brother, Michael. After being institutionalized for 15 years, Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween. No one knows, nor wants to find out, what will happen on October 31st 1978, besides Myers’ psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. He knows Michael is coming back to Haddonfield, but by the time the town realizes it, it’ll be too late for many people. (IMDb)

“It’s Halloween.  Everyone’s entitled to one good scare.”

Halloween is rapidly approaching, meaning it’s the time of year for many things spooky.  While horror films get released throughout all months of the calendar year, it is this spooky month, that is the biggest time to catch these films in theaters, both new and classic.  Recently I was thrilled to assume my normal seat, buttered popcorn and ice less soft drink in hand, to see John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween, on the silver screen.

For over a generation, now, the slasher film has frightened audiences.  After forty seven years the film, still holds up.

I first watched the film, in that awkward time in my life known as my teenage years.  It was on VHS.  I jumped at the scares, while watching that videotape.  I developed a Hollywood crush on Jamie Lee Curtis.  Over the years I hace rewatched the film, many, many times.  It has played on tv, Ihat videotape got a lot of views, and eventually I bought the Blu ray for my movie library.  It’s safe to say I have a love affair with this movie.

Naturally, I was excited to t see this 1978 classic, the way it should be seen, on the largest screen possible.  To hear that ominous score through the surround sound, watch that masterful first person view point opening (which gave me nightmares the first time I saw it), and relive all the frightening scares while  sharing the experience with a moviegoing audience thrilled me.

The shared experience, whether it is a horror film such as Halloween, a musical such as Wicked or any other film is one of the reasons I enjoy going to the movies. For approximately two hours everyone in attendance is drawn together to share a common experience.   I like seeing strangers as well as family and friends on the same place enjoying the same thing, laughing together, singing together, and yes being scared together.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
