STITCH HEAD (2025)

STORYLINE: Follows Stitch Head, a small creature awoken by a Mad Professor in a castle to protect the professor’s other creations from the townspeople of Grubbers Nubbin. (IMDb)

There are all sorts of films, with things that go bump in the night that are designed entertain the entire family.  Ghostbusters (1984) is my personal favorite.  Others releases that I have enjoyed, over time, include Hocus Pocus (1993), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Hotel Transylvania (2012), and Goosebumps (2015).  With some vague idea of what I was getting into I sat down to watch Stitch Head, a new family friendly Halloween centered feature.

All the classic tropes of a monster film come together for this one.  The themes of the monster films of yesteryear are blended with those of family films.  All this, done with modern day CGI.

I am no longer in the age demographic that Stitch Head is targeting.  My lack of enthusiasm showed that fact, as the film ended.  I have enjoyed films that are geared for a younger audience, Paranorman (2012) and most of the Pixar films jump to the front of the line.

The difference between those films and Stitch Head, is there is substance to them.  They treat their young viewers as growing human beings, and give the, content to challenge their young minds, as well as entertain them.

Stitch Head, and films like it, seem to have a stance that a child viewer should view lesser content solely because of their age.  Personally, I think the content should be age appropriate, but as meaningful as you would find in an equivalent film for am adult.  Films like Paranorman, Strange World (2022), and The Princess and the Frog (2009) tell a captivating story, with themes and characters, that reflect today’s society.

Stitch Head missed its mark for me.  There are other spooky films, even ones designed for younger viewers I can rewatch, and be entertained again. Monster House (2006) anyone?

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
