Pay close attention. That’s how I describe the works of director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, 2015). His best works are his collaborations with actress Emma Stone: The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and Kinds of Kindness (2024). The two join forces, once again, for the science fiction, very dark comedy Bugonia.
Bugonia has more on common with Poor Things, then the period piece The Favourite or the anthology film Kinds of Kindness. Both Bugonia and Poor Things have their roots in science fiction. Bugunioa feels more like an episode of the X-Files, while Poor Things took a Frankenstein approach to its story.
What I have come to enjoy in the films from Yorgos Lanthimos, is how unapologetiche he is to push the envelope with making his films bizarre. I feel the same about the works of David Lynch. Mulholland Dr (2001) is the greatest example of David Lynch’s work to prove this point. This new film fromYorgos Lanthimos continues this bizarre, unapologetic trend.
Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Buganoia, nay not be for everyone. It is strange. It worked well for me, with its dark humor, and odd X-Files style plot.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
