K POP DEMON HUNTERS (2025)

STORYLINE:  world-renowned K-Pop girl group balance their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters. (IMDb)

Animated films don’t just fit the classic Disney mold of yesteryear any more.  Yes, with films like Encanto (2021) the traditional animated film still exists.  Then there are films such as the apocalyptic Flow (2024), the stop motion, dark take on  Pinocchio (2022) from Guillermo Del Toro, and Studio Ghibli’s ghost story When Marnie was There (2015) that expand the genre.  K Pop Demon Hunters is now is the new, trendy animated feature, that combines the animated films of yesteryear with a new direction for animated films.

Despite tge title, K Pop Demon Hunters, is one hundred percent a kids film.  It has the traditional model, with songs that young ones will find catchy.  Where the film differs is with its adult like, supernatural plot.  The film is about demon hunters, as the title says.

Clearly, I am not the target audience for this subpar film.  That fact should never stop me from enjoying a film.  After all, I was able to let it go and enjoy Frozen (2013).    The problem with K Pop Demon Hunters is with the story.  It is to simple, and not challenging.  While Encanto and Frozen had simple stories, they challenged their audiences.

This film seems destined to compete at the Academy Awards, in the animated feature and original song categories. These nominations will be more because of the popularity of the film, instead of its quality.

While there are children films I enjoy, K Pop Demon Hunters fell short of that mark.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
