STORYLINE: Tells the story of Christy Martin, the most successful female boxer of the 90s. (IMDb)
I say “boxing movies” you say “Rocky”.
“Boxing movies!” “
Rocky!”
“Boxing movies!”
“Rocky!”
The sub genre of sports films is filled with more then that iconic Oscar winning feature. Cinderella Man (2005) is a favorite of mine. The 2008 documentary Tyson, tells about the legendary Mike Tyson. Of course, there is Million Dollar Baby (2004), starring Hillary Swank, Morgan Freeman, and directed by Clint Eastwood. Sydney Sweeney stars in the latest boxing film, Christy.
Boxing films have a tradition of being testosterone filled and male dominated. Christy bucks that trend, and tells the true story of a woman who dominated the sport throughout the 1990’s.
The film features all the classic staples viewers of boxing films will find in said films: training montages, inspirational quotes, and thrilling boxing matches. Being a true story, Christy, features the ups and downs of the life of Christy Martin. In these segments the film raises issues of domestic abuse, male dominated control, and discrimination. The film mixes them throughout, with the boxing segments.
In the end the film is a positive rallying cry for women, both in sports and in life. It features a message of standing up for who you are.
The problem with Christy is it drags. Setting aside the fact the film is a true story, the 135 minute film took to long to tell its story. A few times throughout I felt bored, and glanced down at my phone to do a time check to see how much time was left.
Christy had an important message yo tell. It told it with. A mixture of exciting no ing sequences and some painfully slow paced moments.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
