WICKED FOR GOOD (2025)

STORYLINE: After challenging the Wizard’s totalitarian regime in Oz, Elphaba must grapple with her identity as the “Wicked Witch of the West”. Meanwhile, the Wizard has given Glinda the title “Glinda the Good” and a public status as the nation’s defender against Elphaba. The two witches must make decisions that seal their fates in this second musical installment. (IMDb)

The King and I (1956),The Sound of Music (1965),  The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Phantom of the Opera (2004), and Wicked (2024) are all big spectacle musicals.  They are the kind of musicals that are meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible, engulfed by the surround sound, and with a sold out crowd tapping along with their favorite songs.  With the long nights of 2025 in full swing, Wicked for Good, is the latest such musical to dance its way to the silver screen.

Much like it’s predecessor, Wicked for Good, features lavish production numbers, set pieces, and costumes.  The songs were catchier in the first Wicked, though.

Being that this is a prequel, another classic musical, The Wizard of Oz (1939), there were obligations to tie the story of the films together.  Classic Oz characters were given interesting back story, and a certain visitor to Oz made an appearance, which was appropriate, and her screen time handled well.

The musical sequel took a 180 in tone from the 2024 original. While Wicked was fun and light hearted, Wicked for Good was darker and more serious.  Had this drastic change in tone been part of one continuous film o would not of liked the feature as much.  Being that Wicked and Wicked for Good are two separate films I am perfectly fine with the tone change.

The musical sequel is a big spectacle production with darker undertones then its predecessor.  It worked well for me.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
