JAY KELLY (2025)

STORYLINE: Famous movie actor Jay Kelly embarks on a journey of self-discovery, confronting his past and present with his devoted manager Ron. Poignant and humor-filled, pitched at the intersection of regrets and glories. (IMDb)

Hollywood likes to make movies about movies and movie stars.  The Ed Wood biopic Ed Wood (1994), for instance.  Then there is the fictional Birdman (2014).  Both Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and Babylon (2021) cover Hollywood history.  The new George Clooney feature, Jay Kelly, where he portrays an actor who at the height his career is yet another Hollywood movie about itself.

The film is a character study.  It takes  its central character, Jay Kelly, and puts his life in perspective for him.

Directed by Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha 2012, While We’re Young 2014, the co writer of 2023’s Barbie), his new feature is  typical of previous work: overly dramatic with moments of unnecessary awkwardness. I have never cared for his films for this reason.

I have out grown Adam Sandler as well, who has a supporting part in this drama.  I still enjoy such comedies, as Happy Gilmore (1996) and Billy Madison (1995) but truly believe his best days were in the 90’s. I will give him credit for 2004’s Spanglish, though.  He has not kept the appeal the way Jim Carrey, has with me over the years.

George Clooney was the one highlight of the film, as the lead role.  He is a talented actor, and that talent was on display in this film. Though it’s not hard to shine in a subpar film. With films such as Good Night and Good Luck (2005) and Micheal Clayton (2007) he has shined in great films.

Jay Kelly was not the film for me.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
