Movies about the filmmaking process take on many different shapes. They can be deeply personal, such as Steven Spielberg’s The Fablemans (2022). Others can be heroic (Argo – 2012, Super 8 – 2011). Babylon (2021) showcases the history of Hollywood, while The Artist (2011) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) are love letters to the films of yesteryear. 2025’s Sentimental Value is an a film about the meaning of family.
Sentimental Value is the kind of heavy drama designed to invoke an emotional response from the viewer. The music is suppose to overwhelm the scene, the dialogue gets overly dramatic, and it is not uncommon for there to be rain. This film bypasses all those tropes to tell a powerful story. The story the making of a film about family tradegy.
Sentimental Value, discuses the creative process. In these discussions the filns talks about the lengths, and struggles artists face going to those lengths, for their art. Those discussions create dialogue, where the overly dramatic dialogue would normally be found.
I sat down expecting to be emotionally black mailed by this film. Instead, I watched a powerful story unfold about family and the creative process.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
