‘Revenge is a dish best served cold’- Klingon proverb.
There is something exciting to watch about revenge films. Steven Spielberg’s Munich (2005) was a nail biting true story. Man on Fire (2004), starring Denzel Washington, was an edge of your seat action film. Who can forget 2014’s John Wick? Not all revenge films are action packed, the 2020 drama Promising Young Woman proves just that. This chilly December weekend, Quentin Tarantino’s revenge opus Kill Bill, is released, in its original long format, instead of two halves.
Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is a marathon of a film, clocking in at almost five hours. The film features an intermission. With my bladder busting large soft drink as part of my regular concessions order, made even more so because I drink it with out ice, that intermission was most welcome. That lengthy runtime is perfectly natural since this epic film was cut in half for its initial release.
So, the question at hand, is Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair worth the time investment? It seems the appeal of this film is to die hard Tarantino fans and mega action lovers. Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is a lengthy, at times, very brutal action film. While playing on the big screen all the bells and whistles of the film are enhanced, which includes that brutality. While I am a fan of Tarantino, a fan of over the top action films, and Kill Bill I understand the hesitation for committing five hours to any film, this film in particular.
With all that said, being able to see the Kill Bill films, in its original long format was a thrill ride. Yes the action sequences are way over the top. They are the kind of sequences that are meant to be experienced for a movie theater, espically when the bride (Uma Thurman) battles her way through the crazy 88.
My one pet peeve was the timing of the intermission. It was placed where the first film ended. It is a logical point to take a break, stretch your legs, ect. It’s not really anything more then a minor annoyance. Ot did not even come close to stop me from enjoying this bloody affair.
Yes I enjoyed this marathon of a film, though I recognize it is not for all filmgoers.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
