STORYLINE: Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness. (IMDb)
It seems like most sports have had their moment of triumph, in cinema. Boxing has Rocky (1976). Horse racing has Seabiscuit (2003). There is Remember the Titans (2000) for football, and basketball has 1994’s Hoop Dreams. Tennis table now serves up Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet.
I have run hot and cold on the films that Timothée Chalamet has appeared in over the years. One of his first films, Interstellar (2014), I loved, and consider it a personal favorite. I enjoyed Dune (2021) and it’s 2024 sequel. Wonka (2023) is a guilty pleasure I did not care for Lady Bird (2017) or Little Women (2019). A Complete Unknown (2024) and Call Me By Your Name (2017) were mediocre. So, where does Marty Supreme fall for me?
While the premise was in place for a good feature, Marty Siprene fell short, of that mark. The central character, Mary Mauser, spent the majority of the film talking about how great he could be, and doing very little to prove it beyond complaining about it. When his moment of trumph arrived, I found myself not caring.
The movie was more about a hustler, then an athlete. This, I found disappointing. Based off the trailer, I was hoping for something more inline with a feel good type sports feature.
It’s safe to say Marty Suprene was not the movie I was hoping it would be.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
