STORYLINE: A successful black businessman, haunted by his crumbling marriage and identity crisis, is drawn into a sexualized game of cat and mouse with a mysterious white woman on a subway that leads to a violent conclusion. (IMDb)
Like every film plot, obsession, has films that fall into the good and bad categories. Misery (1990), The Talented Mr Ripley (1999), and One Hour Photo (2002) are all fantastic features. While The Number 23 (2007) and Unforgettable (2011) are pretty much forgettable. The Dutchman is the latest thriller about obsession.
The Dutchman is a film that has been made numerous times in the past. A successful person makes a bad decision. Then dominos fall as things spiral in this characters personal life. The feature goes for cheap thrills, aided by the storytelling technique of being told in real time.
The problem with this movie is it tries to be hard to be clever with its twists and turns. They are easy to follow, they are unnecessary in the context, of the film. Also, they are never fully explained. Had the twists not been there, and the plot just been straight forward The Dutchman would have been a much better film, and honestly an entertaining one.
In the end, I can’t enjoy them all. That’s ok.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
