    Family relationships are complicated.  Family, at times can be how we interpret ot, but that’s an irrelevant thought to this blog, but I am putting it in none the less..  Time and time again cinema has portrayed this on the big screen.  Disney’s The Parent Trap (1961 & 1998) put this in a family friendly feature.  2013’s August Osage County is a heavy handed drama about the complications of family.  Danny Devito)# 1996 Matilda is a delightful comedy about the quirks of family.  Father Mother Sister Brother is a new drama about family, and all that comes with it.

    Often films with multiple stories to tell, will them all simultaneously, usually leading to a conclusion where all the stories collide.  The best picture winner Crash (2004) utilized this storytelling technique.  Father Mother Sister Brother plays more like a record.  The movie has three distinct stories, with similar themes, that play out to their natural conclusion before going to the next, abd all from rge same artist, director Jim Jarmusch.  Certain Women (2016) followed the same storytelling structure. Each story in Father Mother Sister Brother additionally features dialogue that is the same in each story, that ties each story to the other.

    Each, of the three stories, in the movie goes into the discomfort and  awkwardness that can come with family.  As each story changes, the perspective changes, on these points.  

    Father Mother Sister Brother boasts an impressive ensemble, that includes Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver.  The highlight of the ensemble was Mayim Bailik, who formally co hosted Jeopardy and starred in TV’s The Big Bang Theory.  She played a strong yet subtle character in the first chapter of the film.

   Father Mother Sister Brother was an artsy film about family, with a great ensemble.
