STORYLINE: Greenland sequel. In a continuation of the story, the Garrity family, who survive a near-extinction level event when an interstellar comet hits Earth, must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home. Disaster strikes cinenas in all forms. Volcanoes erupted in L.A. in Volcano (1997). Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton chased tornados in 1996’s Twister. Bruce Willis saved the world from an asteroid in Armageddon (1998). The last bits of mankind waited for the consequences of nuclear disaster in On the Beach (1956).
Gerard Butler returns to the disaster genre with Greenland 2: Migration.
World ending disaster films, such as Greenland (2020), have two natural endings. The first is crisis averted, and life continues. The second is disaster happens in some form. A sequel to these films seems like a difficult task to pull off.
Greenland 2: Migration aimed to pull that task off by having the characters take a journey through the post disaster world. This journey is reminiscent of that in The Land Before Time (1988). Both journeys are feature a destination of a lush, life filled land. Along the way both journeys are filled with excitement and danger. The difference is one is a disaster movie, and the other is an animated family film, with dinosaurs. The journey in this grown up disaster feature worked because it was a bit over the top, and a bit on the fun side of things.
The problem with Greenland 2: Migration was the message. It was a bit on the over powering side, with the new normals of a post pandemic era. It hit the post Covid world metaphors to frequently.
This theme is a natural theme for a disaster sequel, in particular for this one. The first Greenland (2020) was a covid casualty. It lost theatrical revenue because of the pandemic. However, ot did well enough on streaming platforms and a Blu ray release (where I discovered the movie) to warrant the sequel.
Greenland 2: Migration was a disaster film with a fun journey, but a heavy handed message.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
