THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER (2025)

STORYLINE:  Lifelong swimmer and Olympic hopeful Lidia Yuknavitch (Poots) accepts a college swimming scholarship in Texas in order to escape an abusive father and an alcoholic, suicidal mother. After losing her scholarship to drugs and alcohol, Lidia moves to Eugene and enrolls in the University of Oregon, where she is accepted by Ken Kesey to become one of thirteen graduate students who collaboratively write the novel Caverns with him. Drugs and alcohol continue to flow along with bisexual promiscuity and the discovery of S8M helps ease Lidia’s demons. Ultimately Lidia’s career as a writer and teacher combined with the love of her husband and son replace the earlier chaos that was her life. (IMDb)

For those who read this blog regularly know I watch, and enjoy, all kinds of movies.  As part of that I like seeking out smaller, independent features to watch.  Freemont (2023) was an incredible film.  I’m A World . . . (2013) made some great points, with a great since of humor.  The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) had a lot of wit to it.  Sing Sing (2023) was nothing short of breathtaking. Naturally, I was drawn to the recent release The Chronology of Water, directed by Kristen Stewart.

What I like about independent films is there is a more elbow room to tell more compelling stories, with a variety of difficult themes then the average blockbuster.  The Chronology of Water checks both those boxes.

The film is a challenge to watch.  I within its one hundred twenty eight minute runtime it hits home themes of trauma, abuse, loss, and addiction.  The movie showcases a lifelong struggle with these issues, and the struggles to overcome them.  They are not sugar coated, making for a feature that is difficult to watch.  Tgis also makes for a realistic film.  Yes, there are moments  of triumph throughly the film.  The theme of addiction keeps recurring as a coping mechanism.  This gives The Chronology of Water is sense of realism.

The Chronology of z water is an independent film, that covers difficult themes. It covers them well.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
