STORYLINE: Two work colleagues, Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) and her arrogant boss Bradley Preston (Dylan O’Brien), are the only survivors of their company plane crash on a deserted island. Forced to rely on one another for food and shelter, as well as confront old resentments and conflicts. As dwindling resources and rising paranoia put them in a psychological strain, they struggle not only to survive the island’s unforgiving brutal environment, but also to navigate an escalating battle of shifting power dynamics filled with dark humor, tension and unexpected twists (IMDb)
The survival instinct is a basic human instinct, and one that has been capitalized as part of cinema. Matt Damon put his survival skills on full display in The Martian (2015), as were Robert Redford’s in All is Lost (2013). Adrien Brody hid from the nazis, to survive the holocaust, in Roman Polanski’s film The Pianist (2002). Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams, is a new survival feature, now in theaters.
The premise, to create the survival situation is simple enough, a plane crashes and the two central characters wash up on a deserted island. The twist, with Send Help, is it’s done as horror film. Essentially, this movie is Cast Away (2000) meets Misery (1990). That odd combination worked in creating a suspense filled, entertaining feature.
With that said the movie could have been a much better film. The movie took to long to get going. The horror aspects of the film took to long to settle in to the story.
Director Sam Raimi creates spooky atmospheres well in his horror films and thrillers. The Evil Dead (1981) and A Simple Plan (1981) are just two of his films that he did this well. Send Help continues this trend.
Send Help is an entertaining, survibak horror feature that needed to pick up the pace with its story.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
