STORYLINE: A “Man From the Future” arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit the precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence. (IMDb)
Artificial intelligence has had many cinematic incarnations. Hal was requested to open the pod bay doors in 1968’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Machines enslaved the human race in The Matrix (1999). Alicia Vikander starred as an A.I. in Ex Machina (2015). Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, starring Sam Rockwell, is the latest feature to takes the fight to artificial intelligence.
When taking on the A.I. subject there seems to be two types of science fiction films. The first are films, such as Bicentennial Man (1999), that strive to meld the A.I. and the human soul together. The second type of films are the doomsday features, such as The Terminator (1984). Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is the second kind of film, with its A.I. fighting time traveler.
With the one, imagine the first Terminator film updated for the social media age. It comes fully loaded with messages about the effects social media is having on current society. The same with the ease to accessibility to information, through technology such as smart phones.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die isn’t just a message film. It’s also an over the top science fiction film. It’s the kind of movie I keep referring to as one you can sit back with your popcorn, and enjoy the ride. It’s a fun, over the top thrill ride.
Yes, there is a modern day message in this futuristic A.I. film. It is still a thrill to watch.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
