THE NOMINEES – BUTTERFLY, FOREVER GREEN, THE GIRL WHO CRIED PEARLS, RETIREMENT PLAN, and THE THREE SISTERS.
Films come in all forms. Some are feature length, others are short. Some are live action, while some are animated. Some are fiction, and some document the world around them. Films come in languages across the globe. Every year the Academy Awards celebrates movies, including animated shorts. Those films selected as nominees, for the 98th Abbial Academy Awards, are bundled together, in one program, and can be viewed theatrically.
The beauty in programs like this is it brings attention to films that otherwise would not get attention, even if all five film a are not the most note worthy of movies.
Three out of the five nominees, are more then worth the time. Three is a feast. Butterfly, The Girl who Cried Pearls, and Retirement Plan all tell either powerful or unique stories. Each one has its own standout visual style. That’s the way any animated film, short or feature length should be.
Then there’s the two remaining shorts. Neither are bad, they are just not as noteworthy as the previously mentioned three. The Three Sisters is charming. It did not have the story quality as its other three competitors. Forever Green did not accomplish anything that the superior Flow (2024) did not accomplish. Flow did it better. These two shorts were well animated though.
Three animated Oscar nominated shorts were standouts, two were just fine.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
