THE NOMINEES: Butcher’s Stain, A Friend of Dorothy, Jane Austin’s Period Drama, The Singers, The People Exchanging Salvia
There are three short film categories at the Academy Awards (Animated, Documentary, Live Action), and three individual programs playing in theaters, to showcase all of the nominated movies. Just like the animated and documentary categories, the live action nominees feature five nominated films, covering a wide range of subjects.
Out of the five nominees there was one clear standout, which showed at the end of the program. Jane Austin’s Period Drama features all the tropes of a Jane Austin period piece, including the costumes. What makes it stand out is a since of humor that had me, and the others in attendance, laughing throughout the short runtime. That was the most positive response across all the nominees, from all three of the short film categories.
So what about the remaining four nominated live action short films? They had interesting subject matters, and were good films. The Singers and A Friend of Dorothy even had a touch of sweetness to them. Each film was good, not great. The animated and documentary categories had the majority of their nominees as great films. Since this is a completion for the best of, that is to be expected.
The Live Action Oscar Nominated Short Films had one stand, and four good films.
Until next time o will see you at the movies!
