RETRO REWIND – TRUE LIES (1994)

STORYLINE: Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) leads a double life. At work he is a government agent with a license to do just about anything, while at home he pretends to be a dull computer salesman. He is on the trail of stolen nuclear weapons that are in the hands of fanatic terrorists when something more important comes up. Harry finds his wife is seeing another man (Bill Paxton) because she needs some adventure in her life. Harry decides to give it to her, juggling pursuit of terrorists on one hand and an adventure for his wife on the other while showing he can Tango all at once.  (IMDb)

Espionage films are my favorite kind of films to watch. 007 features, like On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) I often sight as some of my favorite things ever to watch.  Three Days of the Condor (1975), Bridge of Spies (2015), The Conversation (1974), and Spy (2015) are all excellent films. Imagine my excitement as I sat down to watch True Lies, another personal favorite, on the big screen, for the first time.

This James Cameron spy epic features action sequences that are exciting to watch, a sharp sense of humor throughout, and an a list ensemble, of performers that I enjoy.  All of that wrapped into a film from my favorite film genre is going to add up to a winning combination. Plus, Jamie Lee Curtis has never made a better film.  This is from someone who also loves horror, in particular her collaborations with John Carpenter on such films as Halloween (1978) and The Fog (1980).

Watching Arnold Schwarzenegger chase the villain, while riding horse, the climatic sequence in Key West, and every action sequence in between had me captivated as they played.  Being able to seem, and be engulfed by the surround sound, of a film I had only experienced on home video previously, was a dream come true.

In addition to being a film I love, in a genre I love, True Lies, was on my bucket list of films to see on the big screen. I was thrilled to have been in attendance.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
