Film speaks to everyone, and about everything, including the African American experience. Powerful dramas such as Daughters of the Dust (1991), Waves (2019) and Moonlight (2016) to superhero films, that include, Black Panther (2018) tell a wide range  of stories.  Included in that range are inspirational true films such as 2016’s Hidden Figures, and the recent Oscar winning horror movie Sinners.  Seeds is a new film about the African American experience, focusing in particular on farming in today’s society.

When one mentions farming documentaries movies such as The Biggest Little Farm (2018) and Food Inc (2008) immediately come to mind.  Seeds shares a few similar, general talking points but the focus is much different.  This documentary feature shows the struggles that the modern farmers are going through to make a living.  This film dives deep into the struggles to get the subsidies needed for things such as equipment upkeep, and financial aid when crops fail.  Seeds goes further into the frustrations of not having these resources, when farms owned and operated by farmers of other skin tones have easier access to these funds.

The documentary also shows a lot of pride. Their is pride for owning, and operating the farmland for a hundred years. The feature goes into how much it means to keep this farm going for the family now, and generations to come.

Seeds is a powerful documentary about the modern day African American  farmer.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
