STORYLINE: An intimate, unconventional portrait of Marc Jacobs, crafted by Sofia Coppola to capture the genius and singular universe of the iconic American designer. (IMDb)
Lights! Camera! Fashion! Fashion and cinema what a natural combination! The Devil Wears Prada (3006), a guilty pleasure of mine, is an entertaining feature on the subject. Phantom Thread (2017) takes a dramatic approach to fashion. Then there is the 2009 documentary The September Issue, giving audiences a look into how Anna Wintour prepares Vogue magazine. Sofia Coppola has now turned her eye to the fashion world with a documentary on fashion icon Marc Jacobs, in her latest motion picture, Marc by Sofia.
Over the years director Sofia Coppola’s work has its ups and downs. Her Oscar winning Lost in Translation (2003) and Priscilla Presley biopic
Priscilla (2023) hit the high marks. The Bling Ring (2013) and On The Rocks (2020) are at the other end of that spectrum. Marie Antoinette (2006) split the difference, and was great on initial watch, but does not hold up to rewatch.
The Marc Jacobs documentary, of hers, naturally features all the glamorous fashion one would expect in such a feature. Like a documentary is suppose to be, it gives insight into the subject matter, and a peak behind the curtain into his creative process.
The majority of Marc by Sofia is a fluff piece, on the fashion icon. Fans of his will truly love it. Sprinkled into the documentary are fashion students, who sit down for a brief one on one for a learning opportunity. These moments, while hero worship add to the fluff piece, also add a inique insight into the fashion world.
Where does the documentary stand in the pantheon of Sofia Coppola films? It’s in the middle of the road. The long term question is will it be worth watching more then once like Priscilla, or will it fall to the way side like Marie Antoinette? Time will tell.
Till next time, I will see you at the movies!
