What an image it is when the count made his debut in 1931’s Dracula.  How memorable it was when Kevin Costner carried Whitney Houston to safety in The Bodyguard (1992).  It was memorable when Simba was held up to the world on The Lion King (1994).  Using her photographs and diary entries, the new documentary, I’m Not Everything I Want to Be, tells the life of Libuše Jarcovjáková.

Sometimes, a film can portray a story without dialogue.  I’m Not Everything I Want to Be is an incredibly visual motion picture.  The visuals, that tell the story, are completely made of photos taken by the subject.  The images alone could, and do, show you the life of Libuše Jarcovjáková.

The documentary does come with narration.  The narration comes first hand from Libuše Jarcovjáková herself.  It consists of personal diary entries.  It is here, the viewer, gets the first person perspective of her life.

The perspective is her documenting the the LGBTQ scene in 1940’s Prague.  The film features the full spectrum of the LGBTQ scene at the tine and place.  It proves joy and discrimination dies not know borders or time.

I’m Not Everything I Want to Be is a documentary that maximizes the first hand experience of its subject, through her photos and personal diary entries, creating a very intimate feature film.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
