Retro Rewind: THE PHANTOM (1996)

STORYLINE: Four hundred years ago, a young boy witnessed his father’s death during an attack on their ship by the bloodthirsty Sengh Brotherhood. He was washed ashore on Bengalla Island where he swore to devote his life to bring down piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice. He became The Phantom, a masked avenger whose role was passed down from father to son, leading people to believe in an immortal figure called “The Ghost Who Walks”. The 21st successor to the role of Bengalla’s resident superhero must travel to New York City to prevent a power-hungry businessman from obtaining three magic skulls that would give him the secret to ultimate power.   I grew up in the ninties.  My developing young mind soaked up all the cinematic pop culture it could.  In 1997 I went to see my first James Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies, and a fan boy was immediately created. I have nostalgia for films such as Jumanji (1995), Mission Impossible (1996), and Mystrey Men (1999).  One of my favorites is The Phantom, from 1996, starring Billy Zane.

The movie is a fun superhero movie.  The hero, The Phantom, does not have super powers or a magical hammer .  He is a guy in a suit, and depending on wit and skills learned. The feature is a textbook cheesy nineties movie.

There was a recent screening, that I was looking forward to since its announcement, last fall.  I had a blast watching all 100 minutes of the movie, on the big screen.  I was taken to an era of videotapes, and video rental stores.  This is where I first saw The Phantom, and films from my childhood that I remember so fondly.

I was nervous about the movie.  It had been many years since I h last watched the motion picture.  I was nervous that it wouldn’t be what I remembered.  In the end, it didn’t matter.  It was a great rewatch for me.

The Phantom was a nostalgia filled, fun the electrical experience.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
