Movies are a reflection of their current times. In the 1940’s and 50’s the crime genre had a bit of romance to it and the films were tied up neatly. Key Largo and To Have and Have Not being classic examples. By the 1970’s it seemed that making the crime genre epic was the way to go go in popular culture. The Godfather.  Now that we are divided it appears that the genre has gone for extremes and diving even deeper into the shadows.  This is the case with Limbo, starring Simon Baker (Margin Call, Land of the Dead).

The black and white cinematography  in creating a bleak atmosphere throughout the film.  The story is bleak on its own, combing it with the visual elenent is the collaborative craftwork of talented filmmakers.

The story moves slowly.  However, it works for the movie.  It keeps the viewer guessing.  The flip side is there are a few to many moving pieces.  When leaving the theater it takes some extra head scratching to piece together how the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
