“I to am strange and unusual” – Beetlejuice. 

   I look at iy as there are many strange and unusual kinds of movies.  There are films like Beetlejuice that are a fun ride to watch. On the other side of the spectrum are films like Kinds of Kindness, where I came out scratching my head asking myself “what did I just watch?”

     The Substance, much like Kinds of Kindness, is a head scratcher. Unlike Kinds of Kindness it is a bit easier to follow. 

   The Substance is mislabeled has a horror film. It is intense but I did not feel the same atmosphere I do when I see a horror film. 

   The main connection is a few scenes of gore but those are rare. Like some classic horror films that I adore the gore is there to support the story not the other way around. The oribkem of the story supporting the gore is a proble, I feel has plagued horror in the 2010’s with popular films like the Hostel franchise and countless sequels. 

    At the heart of The Substance is Demi Moore’s brilliant performance. She had an uphill battle to make the opposing duel roles work for well over two hours. She met the challenge and met it well.

   The comparison I have with The Sun-Substance is David Cronenberg’s Videodrone. 

   There is alot with this film and I will admit I am sure I missed a fair amount with it as I processed what o was watching.
