STORYLINE: At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television – and culture – forever. Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Full of humor, chaos, and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, we count down the minutes in real time until we hear those famous words (IMDb)

There is a connection between the western High Noon, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope, the courtroom drama 12 Angry Men, the romance feature Before Sunset, and the 2024 release Saturday Night. Are you scratching your head yet at this random list of movies? Stop scratching your pretty head, I don’t want to be responsible for a bald spot. The connection is every movie is told in real time. It is a storytelling device I enjoy.
Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air), takes the viewer behind the chaotic scenes leading up to the debut broadcast of SNL.
I enjoy behind the scenes chaos. That’s why the Oscar winning Birdman appealed to me so much. For that same reason Saturday Night struck my fancy. 108 minutes after the trailers ended I arose from my seat not disappointed.
The film fully captured the chaos and showed the inexperience of an up and coming cast of talent. That talent both in front of and behind the camera.
I will admit I do not know what happened that night but being a drama, not a documentary. I a, not an expert on the subject of SNL. Yes I am admitting I don’t know everything. I assume there were liberties taken in telling the story for the sake of entertainment that’s natural.
I really enjoyed not knowing the majority of the cast. I enjoyed recognizing my favorite cast members from classic SNL.
Sorry I don’t have a musical art to close this blog. I will close with my normal catch phrase though. Until next time I will see you at the movies!
