THE SURFER (2024, released in 2025)

STORYLINE: A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. When he is humiliated by a group of locals, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising and pushes him to his breaking point. (IMDb).

Over the past few years Nicolas Cage has starred in a variety of ifilms that hace intrigued me, entertained me, and I will admit crossed into the strange and bizzairec. These releases included the horror feature Longlegs, the blockbuster Renfield, the western The Okd Way, and the action flick The Retirement Plan.  My favorite of these are the over the top The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and the bizarre Dream Scenario.  Adding to the list is The Surfer.

The film explores the fondness of what once was with what is now.  Basically how things change. It does so in this new, unusual phase of Nicolas Cage’s career. It works.

The film is a little disjointed at times but it seems like it is is supposed to be.  The dusjointment comes in the films pacing. It doesn’t vary from act to act but within the individual acts.

Of this new phase of Nicolas Cage’s career this is his weakest performance. While The Uneatable Seight of Massive Takevt is certainly the most fun of these films, driven by his performance, the best of his performances is a toss up between Longlegs and Dream Scenario.

In the end I am glad I watched The Surfer.  Realistically it won’t surprise if I doubt watch it again.  That is on home video, it is very rare I see movies twice in the theaters.  Flow, earlier this year was the first one since 2021’s No Time to Die.

Until next time I will see you at the movies,
