When a film is so iconic can a sequel live up to the original? Sometimes, yes. Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and Blace Runner 2049 (2017) absolutely met that mark. Films such as Blues Brothers 2000 (1998) limboed under the bar, with room to spare. Some where in between is the 2025 release Karate Kid: Legends.
The blend of the iconic 1984 Karate Kid and the 2010 remake is entertaining and is about it. The crossover fit the formula that the franchise has created, creating a predictable popcorn flick. It’s fun to watch. There’s nothing wrong with that. What it does it helps me to appreciate the films I like better more. I, not saying I done like or appreciate films like Karate Kid: Legends, there’s just others I like and appreciate more.
There is still plenty of summer to go. There are plenty of big blockbuster spectacles to wow me. This one just fell short of that mark.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
