STORYLINE: Set in a post-apocalyptic future where an event known as “The Quiet Rapture” caused all known stars and habitable planets in the universe to disappear, a convict is sent to search an ocean of blood discovered on a desolate moon, using a small submarine nicknamed the “Iron Lung”. (IMDb)
The future has been a subject of fascination, in movies, across the years. The post apocalypse has been a particular plot point. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), The Road (2009), and Zombieland (2009) all take place after the apocalypse. As does the new science fiction thriller Iron Lung.
Much like the sci fi
film Moon (2009) and the shark thriller The Shallows (2016), Iron Lung has one character on screen, with limited others featured off camera, throughout the movie. Simon, the central character, interacts with other characters, they are just off screen. There is a lot of screen time, though, were it just him propelling the events forward. Other films that have used this technique have been more entertaining, then Iron Lung. The difference has been the runtime. For example, Iron Lung is thirty minutes longer then both Moon and The Shallows.
Iron Lung has its moments of suspense. Primarily these moments are sprinkled throughout the first act. By the time the movie ended I had more of a feeling of claustrophobia then I did of suspense. Sense the entirety of the movie took place in a small submarine this comes as no surprise.
In the end Iron Lung had a few moments of suspense, that did mot hold throughout a film that needed to be shorter.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
