STORYLINE: A happily engaged couple is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails. (IMDb)
The roller coaster ride of relationships has often sparked cinematic stories, across the genres. A rom com like 500 Days of Summer (2009), drama like Blue Valentine (2010), and well, I don’t really know what genre to put Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) in, but all tell stories about the ups and downs of romance. The new film, that stars Zendaya and Robert Patterson, The Drama, explores that territory, as well.
Shock value in movies is not limited just to the gory depths of horror. The concept is very easily transferable to other genres. It feels like comedies, such as Borat (2006) will use shock value as a visual gag for a laugh. In The Drama, shock value is used as a story mechanism to propel the events of the film forward.
The problem that surrounds this film, and much like what is plagued the torture, porn films, the story is solely shock value. By the conclusion of the film the drama (no pun intended) has fallen to the wayside, because the film keeps trying to one to one up itself, with surprises, twists, and turns. It’s undramatic, abd kept me from truky getting into the movie.
The Drama is more of a shocking movie, then a dramatic motion picture.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
