Retro Rewind: PINK FLAMINGOS (1972)

STORYLINE: Sleaze queen Divine lives in a caravan with her mad hippie son Crackers and her 250-pound mother Mama Edie, trying to rest quietly on their laurels as ‘the filthiest people alive’. But competition is brewing in the form of Connie and Raymond Marble, who sell heroin to schoolchildren and kidnap and impregnate female hitchhikers, then sell the babies to lesbian couples. Finally, they challenge Divine directly, and battle commences.(IMDb)

In 1974 John Waters and Devine collaborated on a movie called Female Trouble.  Future collaborations included 1984’s Polyester and 1988’s Hairspray.  Of course, when mentioning the works of this dynamic duo, 1972’s cult classic Pink Flamingos is ushered to the top of the list.

The premise behind Pink Flamingos is absurd, but so is the Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).  That’s what makes this one fun to watch.  You know it’s going to be filthy, after all it comes with a NC-17 rating.  In all honesty it be reduced to R today, but that’s a separate issue.  With that in mind, you sit back and watch the shenanigans as they unfold.

Recently I was in attendance, of a late night screening of Pink Flamingos, with a decent sized crowd.  Iy was the first feature of a doubke feature. The second being Female Troubles.  That’s the best way to watch cult classics, such as these. Those in attendance, seem to genuinely want to be there. This was the case for this screening.  Everyone was enjoying the movie, as evident by the consistent laughter at the fifty year plus gags.  After the movie ended folks were talking about the first time, and recalling past experiences, watching the John Waters classic.

This is the kind of movie going experience I love having in my life.  As much as o enjoy sharing it on this format, my regret is o flew solo that night, as I do to a fair number pf movies I see.  I enjoy socializing, yet I see, to struggle getting folks to join me at the movies.  At least I enjoy my company, and had a hell Mir a Devine, of a time at the screening.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
