STORYLINE: An accompanying 3D concert film, documenting the Manchester shows and co-directed by Eilish and James Cameron. (IMDb)
Throughout his career James Cameron’s films have had a theatrical flare to them. Aliens (1986), True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009): and its subsequent sequels are just a few of his features that exemplify the movie going experience. It seems natural he would direct, or in the case of his latest film, Billie Ellish Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live on 3D, co-direct a concert movie.
There is a brilliance in concert films. They can reach fans of the artist simultaneously, across the country. Fans can see the show for the price of a movie ticket instead of a concert ticket. For those who get overwhelmed by the potential massive crowds of a live event they can see the concert from the comfort of a movie theater. In some cases there is a behind the scenes peak mixed into the creative process, of putting the concert together.
Personally I am not a fan of Billie Ellish’s music, the one exception is the No Time to Die theme song. This has more to do with the fact it’s a 007 song then a Billie Ellish track though. I went to see the concert feature for the behind the scenes look into the creative process. Those moments were teased in the trailer.
The documentary segments of Billie Ellish Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live on 3D were far and few between. Even less so were the insights into the creativity, that we r into putting the concert together. Instead these portions of the film focus on who Billie Ellish is an individual.
The concert portions of the film, which dominated the film were loud and obnoxious. Additionally the light show, that companied it, was overstimulating.
Not being a fan of of Billie Ellish is irrelevant. I am not a fan of Depeche Mode but throughly enjoyed their concert film Depeche Mode: M from last year. Nor am I a fan of Amy Winehouse music but the 2015 documentary Amy is one of the best documentaries about musicians out there.
Billie Ellish Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live on 3D is a disappointing concert documentary.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
