Do you know what one of the things I like about movies is? Versatility. Genres have sub genres, such as dark comedies being a sub genre of comedy. Highlights for me include Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), Fargo (1996), and Thank You For Smoking (2005). Director Boots Riley returns to the directors chair for the first time since 2018, after directing Sorry to Bother You, with the new dark comedy I Love Boosters, starring Kiki Palmer.
What I like about datk comedies is they can offer viewers, more of a story then a slapstick comedy. Please don’t miss understand me, I do enjoy slapstick comedies as well. I am serious when I say I have quoted Airplane (1980) multiple times. There’s more of a story to films like Fargo and I Love Boosters. These films tend to serious themes.
I Love Boosters is a dark comedy that checks both the story and themes boxes. The film speaks to materialism, class struggle, and workers rights. These themes are worked into an entertaining story, as well.
The film is a comedy, even if it is a dark comedy. Some of the humor is uncomfortable, but that supports the points the movue is making. There are plenty of hynerlus moments that are non uncomfortable, and I enjoyed laughing out loud, as they played.
To establish a baseline I am a fan of the director’s debut feature Sorry to Bother You. I was eager to see the next film, I Love Boosters, from the filmmaker. After an hour and forty five minutes I was not disappointed. I enjoy the story, I enjoyed the humor.
I Love Boosters is a dark comedy that features a variety of serious themes, and blends bits of uncomfortable humor with genuine laughs.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
