STORYLINE: After a therapist’s patient disappears into a dimension beyond reality, she must venture into the unknown to save him. (IMDb)
Frightening things happen in horror films, that feature secret rooms, dungeons, and spooky layers. Cube (1997), 1408 (2007), and Escape Room (2019) all layer their spooks in such a fashion. Joining these features, is the 2026 horror release Backrooms.
Thetrre are potential limitations in making movies about mysterious rooms, and spooky locations. There are only so many corners to hide in, and jump out of to scare the audience. A feature, more then most, needs to lean on its story to create a good movie. Cube did this well, story and scares. Backrooms did neither.
The story was setup pretty simply in Backrooms. The film became convoluted and as follow through of that set up. There were to many twists and turns, none that really made since in context of the story.
The movie is based on a series of YouTube shorts. Clearly, Tgis did not translate into feature length material.
Backrooms didn’t work as a horror film. The majority of the scares were able to be spotted well before they occurred. This eliminated much of the fright, from the motion picture.
This was a horror film that featured inspired scares, and a less inspired story.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
