STORYLINE: A black girl from Senegal becomes a servant in France.  (IMDb)

     Divisions in society is part of every culture across the globe. Many portrayals of society division have come across in cinema in a wide variety of films such as the anime film from Pakistan The Glassworker (2024) or the historic best picture Oscar winner Parasite (2019), from South Korea.  In honor of its 60th year, I attended a screening, of the French film, Black Girl, which was the first time I sat down to see the film. 

   One of the most powerful abilities that film has can accomplish is to capture a moment in time. That moment can capture a feeling, a piece of history, and/reflect the era in which the film is from.  Black Girl is a motion picture about the class system in the mid 60’s France.

    The film is a short sixty five minutes.  Not a minute is wasted, as it tells the story of a black woman lower class woman.   The film shows, in depth, her struggles, and the prejudice is she faces because of her lower class.  This os the film that the American movie The Help (2011) tried to be, and fell short. 

    Black Girl an incredible look at culture, struggle, and standings in society.  Because of this it gets uncomfortable to watch. Because of this it is also an important film to watch, no matter what part of the world you call home. 

    Black Girl is celebrating it 60th year of release this year! Is a powerful and moving motion picture that needs to be seen!
