STORYLINE: Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion. (IMDb)
For the past few years now, I’ve done a series of retrospective blogs, on holiday features. This year, I am starting early, after all Disney gets to start advertising the theme parks at Christmas, in August in the theater, why can’t I start my holiday blogs in October? The reason for me doing this, though, is to include some horror or seasonally festive spooky features as part of the retrospective for Halloween. After all Halloween is a holiday. Aa always these blogs will focus on movies. I see in theaters. I’m gonna get started with a great hybrid Halloween/Christmas motion picture, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Growing up in the nineties, the era of vhs, this Halloween/Christmas mash up was not in my regular rotation. Ok it was not in my rotation at all. Home Alone (1990) and its sequel where two holiday films in heavy rotation, and spooky things were not my thing yet. Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was not yet on my radar.
Some time, in my high school years, I discovered this family, friendly, cinematic, delight! Instantly, I was in drawn into the animated world workd of both Halloween and Christmas.
This October this holiday blend of cinenatic magic played in theaters, once again. It has been a few years since I viewed my copy, (blu ray not vhs, in you’re wondering) and one October afternoon was transported into the world created on The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I had a lot of fun watching the musical numbers, viewing the classic 90s animation, and seeing the crazy characters act out the story all on the big screen. I could not help but wonder would an elementary school age version of me been into this feature film, and put ot into regular rotation, if I was open to seeing it at the time?
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
