STORYLINE: From Focus Features and Working Title comes an irresistible new take on Jane Austen’s iconic Sense and Sensibility: a charming, witty, and deeply relatable story of love and sisterhood starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles. (IMDb)
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio had a romance, at sea, in Titanic (1997). The love affair between Anne Boleyn and King Henry the VIII was the subject of The Other Boleyn Girl (2008). The tale of Juliet and her Romeo received the Bollywood style feature treatment with the 2025 release of Juliet and Romeo. The latest historical tale of romance, to light up the silver screen, is an adaptation of Jane Austin’s Sense and Sensibility.
One of the biggest films of the year has been an adaptation of classic literature, with the summer release The Odyssey. Other 2026 literary adaptations have taken viewers to outer space (Project Hail Mary) and to the brink of heart break (Reminders of Him). So, it is time to go back to English class with the latest adaptation of the Jane Austin classic Sense and Sensibility.
Sense and Sensibility shoehorns itself onto the shelf of period costume dramas. It has all the costumes and set pieces found, in the genre and Jane Austen adaptations. There is nothing original to be seen there.
However, this 2026 adaptation does something different with its visual style, and goes for a grittier, darker look. It is a contrast to the vibrant visual style of the 1995 adaptation, from director Ang Lee.
This darker look to the Jane Austen adaptation adds a sense of realism to the movie. It didn’t stop this from feeling like I was watching a high school English lesson though, just a little less so then the 1995 feature or 2005 Pride and Prejudice.
Sense and Sensibility is mostly a run of the mill Jane Austin adaptation. Ot just looks a bit darker then it’s predecessor.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
