WICKER (2026)

STORYLINE: An ostracized fisherwoman commissions the local basketmaker to weave her a husband, but when her wicker creation proves unexpectedly extraordinary, his presence ignites jealousy and upheaval that threatens their quiet village.  (Imdb)

In Bride of Frankenstein (1935), a love story was created. It was back to school, in the John Hughes’  creation comedy Weird Science (1985).  In The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), a creation was made for companionship.  Wicker, a new romance in the making, has made its way onto the big screen.

Typically movies about artificially creating life aren’t associated with being love stories.  Horror films, like Frankenstein (1931), or animated wonders, such as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022), are the stereotype.  Wicker, is a film where life is artificially created, and is a dark rom com.

Wicker features all the makings of a romantic comedy.  Girl and boy meet, fall in love, and have a.l the ups and downs pf a  relationship, throughout the movie.  There is a since of humor, a dark since of humor, through out.  It is just that the man in the relationship was created, not born.

The way to do this story, is as a dark comedy.  This way Wicker was an entertaining motion picture, instead of a socially awkward one to watch.

Following the rom com trajectory, with that the movie has plenty of funny and sweet moments blended together.

It’s also very fun to see Olivia Coleman in the lead, as the female love interest.  Peter Dinklage has a great supporting part as well, as the Dr Frankenstein,  like character.

Wicker is a Bride of Frankenstein like tale, as a dark, cookie cutter like romantic comedy. It is entertaining, because of it’s dark humor.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
