The 2023 feature Freemont, told a fictionalized story of a translator in the Agfan/U.S. war who immigrated to the U.S. after the war. At the heart of the film, House of Sand and Fog (2003) Ben Kingsley portray in immigrant, insert of the American dream. Fjord, a new international feature film, has found its way to American theaters.
Immigration is an issue not limited to the United States. Fjord, is a Norwegian feature, about a Romanian family in Norway, proves just that.
Beyond immigration, this international feature covers a variety of topics. The film discusses family, religious freedoms, and child abuse. When that is all added together, Fjord becomes a powerful drama.
What makes this movie work, is how all the pieces come together. The film starts with a strong and engaging story, that is well cast with talented performers. There is a lot to capture, from intimate home scenes to dramatic courtroom scenes, and each has its own distinct look, that blends together, seamlessly. In the back ground, there is a a musical score, that supports the film, as needed. It does not dominate the moment, nor should it.
Part of the thrills I get from following movies, is following the Oscar buzz. In addition to being an interesting looking movie, Fjord, is getting buzz for the Acafrmu Awards, in particular in the best picture and international categories. After seeing the movie I understand the reasoning for this attention, and agree with it.
Combing a powerful story, with a well crafted motion picture, Fjord is a strong international film.
Until next time, I’ll see you at the movies!
