STORYLINE: Lorne Michaels, creator of Saturday Night Live (1975), offers unprecedented access to the man who built and sustained the institution for five decades.(IMDb)
“Live from New York it’s Saturday Night!!!”
What an iconic line from a show that has entertained viewers for five decades. Lorne, focuses its lens on the creator of that legendary comedy show. This documentary joins documentaries such as The Gospel According to Andre (2017), Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), and Marley (2012) to tell the stories of iconic American pop culture figures.
Documentaries that where the subject participate have a tendency to be fluff pieces. Sometimes the subject, of such documentaries, are brutally honest, creating a truly fasinating feature. Lorne falls in between the two.
Lorne is compiled of interviews with Michael Lorne himself, and those he has collaborated with over the years. The movie shows the legendary producers rise to fame, bits and pieces of hus personal life, behind the scenes of SNL, and sprinkled in is appreciation of Micheal Lorne.
For fans of Saturday Night Live and/or the creative process Lorne will be an appealing feature. The in depth, behind the scenes peek into what goes into making SNL, is fasinating. These parts of the film include staffers, their work process, as well as Lorne’s work process, and all the rituals that the staff have.
While Lorne has its moments of humor, it is a serious look at a legendary television producer.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
