THE SHEEP DETECTIVES (2026)

STORYLINE: In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.  (IMDb)

The Silence of the Lambs frightened audiences in 1991. There was a murder to solver in Murder on the Orient Express in  1971 and again in 2017.  In 1976 audiences laughed out loud as they figured out the nurder case in Murder by Death.  Now, the sheep are on the case in the family friendly The Sheep Detectives.

Murder mysteries are often suspense filled feature films.  The stereotype is to be told from the perspective of the detective investigating the murder.  This is makes perfect sense.  The Sheep Detectives partially breaks from that tradition.  The film is not a suspense filled motion picture, instead is a family friendly murder mystery.  It is still told from the perspective of the detectives, just with a twist. That twist being a detectives of sheep, hence the title.

The setup is a basic murder mystery, there’s a victim, a case to solve, twists and turns, and a resolve. With its premise, The Sheep Detectives, sees itself up to be potentially all kinds of movies. It could be corny, overly sentimental, or just really stupid.  It’s a delicate balancing act, to make this a good film.  In succeeding in that balancing act, The Sheep Detectives ends up being a fun movie.

What makes it a blast to watch?  It has a little bit of everything. It has thay corniness, those sentimental moments, a since of humor, and a subtle message that is blended well together.  The movie also features an all star cast, that seemed to. genuinely enjoy being in the film.

The Sheep Detectives ends up being a fun feature film, for everyone in the family, not just the kiddos. This was evident by a full audience, the majority being grown-up, call thoroughly enjoying the movie!

Until next time, I’ll see you at the movies!
